Student Task - Holiday Adventure
Students are given the challenge to plan a week long holiday for their family with $10 000, and they can go anywhere in the world.
There is a student task syllabus conections file (below) which has some activities you may like to use in class, these allow student to do some interactive activities associated with various aspects of the task.
Recommended countries - Australia, China, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Russia, South America and Thailand. (These countries have a large amount of information available about travel to them and there customs)
Students will be divided into groups of four which will become their 'family' and they need to plan their holiday according to the needs of their family.
- Each group will need to decide on roles for magazine production, (editor, photographer, writers etc)
- All members of group will do research.
Students will use technology to do this task, internet, computer and software.
Students will display their final product as an online magazine.
Recommend to the students that they may like to look at the following things:
- Locate the destination on a world map and identify nearby cities and neighbouring countries.
- Find the most convenient way to travel to the destination, and travel within the country.
- Find out the weather for that region, best season to travel.
- Find out what type a dress is appropriate.
- Find out about the local currency and the current exchange rate
- Identify where you will get local information from.
- Find a nice, moderately-priced hotel or hotels to stay in.
- Identify 2 restaurants in or near the hotel area, for a hotels you are staying in
- Identify the traditional foods of the area.
- Find out how to say “Hello”, “Thank you” and “Where is the xxx?” in the local language.
- Find and agree on between 3-4 places to visit and/or sights to see during the trip.
- Find photographs of places, culture, people, foods etc.
- Survey or questionnaire of class about their past or comming holiday destinations.
- Discuss and decide what to do during each of the 7 days of the holiday, itinerary and budget.
Presentation
Presentation for the task will be an online magazine, each group will do a separate magazine.
Magazine would need to contain;
- Cover and content page.
- Introduction by editor.
- Pages of the information the group has researched their pages might including, maps, articles about the country (where it is ,near countries, capital, other main cities, population), where to get information, language, accommodation, itinerary, weather, food, transport, cultural protocols, dress, photographs with descriptions, and any other interesting information depending on the information they have collected.
