The idea of this website is to provide you with the resources required to engage students in an authentic Society and Environment task about planning an overseas holiday. The resources provided can be adapted for both year four and five students. The students will produce an online travel magazine which can be accessed by the school community online and can be printed for viewing in the library and presented at a school assembly.

You will find an outline of the student tasks, syllabus connections both to toic and tasks, a marking rubric, online information resources for you to use or provide to your students, the necessary resources your students will need to record research, some of the free online magazines available, and some extension ideas you may want to incorporate into other learning areas.

The Task

 Student are given the challenge to plan a week long holiday for their family with $10 000. They can go anywhere in the world.

In groups of four they will become a 'family,' and students will be required to research somewhere they wish to go for their seven day overseas holiday. Recommend to students that they might like to consider finding details about:

• Basic geographical information
• Population
• Transport
• Weather and seasons
• Cultural protocols
• Currency and exchange
• Accommodation
• Restaurants
• Traditional foods
• Language phrases
• Photographs
• Four tourist sites to see.

 All research will be presented in an online magazine, along with an itinerary and budget. These magazines may be presented to a wider audience by providing links on your school website, informing students and parents of the links via your school newsletter, or setting up the display in the library with a presentation at an assembly.

Suggestions for timing and managing  the task

• The Plan a holiday activity should be completed over a time period of about 3 weeks .

• The lessons should be completed in classes of Society and Environment and Information Technology as this authentic learning tasks reaches across both subjects.

• The first part of the task is where the students need to organize their groups and the role each person will have in the magazine. 

• Then each group will decide on their destination country and find the relevant information  before they are able to go on to the next step of making the online magazine. This part of the task should be completed after 1 week.

• The final part of the task is completing the online magazine. This part of the task will be the most time consuming and will take up the next 2 weeks.

• To help keep the students on task a check list on word document is included. This will enable students to tick off the work as they complete it, and also keep you up to date with where the students are up to and what they still need to do to complete the activity.

• To further help you keep up to date with where the students are up to and with who is working to task during the activity is a teacher checklist. This will enable a quick and easy check off for work completed by your students and also gives you a easy reference guide to go over when marking after the activity is completed.
